CCE off, CBSE goes back to old system

The controller exams of Central Board of School Education (CBSE) K K Choudhary announced revival of class X board exams from March 2018. The CBSE official made this announcement while addressing a gathering of CBSE school principals regarding new reforms in examination 2018 at Samanway Bhavan here on Tuesday.

In the first session of his briefing, he informed school principals and mediapersons that class X students must prepare themselves to face board exams in March 2018, the exact dates of which would be released shortly. "We have been conducting class X exams on the basis of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) mode since 2009, but now the board feels that we go should go back to the old system of conducting the exams by the board itself.

The board will be conducting exams of 100 per cent of the syllabus," Choudhary said. Stressing on the need to revive the board exams and scrapping CCE, he said it will boost the confidence of students and the students would be able to do well in class XI exams. "The decision has been taken not because schools were not able to conduct the exams properly, but because the CCE was not feasible for pan-India exams," he said.

Choudhary said, "Board exams will boost confidence of students. I believe with time we will bring more refinement in the exam pattern." Choudhary said the board exam has become important in the context of improving quality of education across country which was not achieved by the CCE system. "The schools will have only 20 per cent of the weightage and the board will have 80 per cent weightage.

However, the students will have to pass both the exams with minimum 33 per cent marks in both the categories," he added. The controller exams said that the circular in this regard will be shortly issued by the board as it is presently being documented by the board. In August last year, the decision to revive the Class X boards was mulled over during a meeting between MHRD and the Central Advisory Board of Education.

Choudhary informed that re-introduction of the examination was discussed at the education ministers' conference and also the views of parents and other stakeholders were taken into consideration. Regarding scrapping of 'moderation policy' under which grace marks are given to students in exams for difficult questions, he said it will continue until board takes a final decision on the matter.
